Positive Psychology: Contemporary Developments and Applications

Positive Psychology is the newest and fastest growing field of Psychology. With its main characteristic being the emphasis on human development, the process of self-realization and the search for bliss, happiness and well-being, it has (re)brought to the fore concepts and theoretical models linked not only to ensuring and promoting mental health but also to learning, achievement, performance and effectiveness. In this symposium we will address the latest theoretical developments, research findings, and applications of Positive Psychology in psychotherapy, counseling, and work.

APPLICATIONS OF POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
The Hellenic Society of Positive Psychology is the only scientific organization in Greece that focuses on the study and development of Positive Psychology. As part of its activities, it has participated in the development of research actions and initiatives. In this symposium we present four different applications of Positive Psychology. In the first presentation we focus on the role of experiencing positive emotions in clients' narratives after completing a successful therapeutic process. The second presentation focuses on the concept of mental resilience in teachers and on those factors that are directly related to the occurrence of, but also protection from, burnout. The third presentation presents the first research findings regarding group training for the development of enjoyment. Finally, in the fourth presentation we focus on the relationship between the experience of emotions and the administration of justice.

The department of Positive Psychology of ELPSE aspires to be a pole for the development of the study of positive psychology in Greece. In this symposium we first present an introductory talk on the birth and development of positive psychology. In this presentation we focus on the factors that help in its birth but also in its conceptual development. The second presentation focuses on the concept of mental resilience and its development in the psychotherapeutic process. Resilience is a central concept in positive psychology, and a broader understanding of it is directly linked to psychological well-being. In the third presentation, reference is made to the possible beneficial role of experiencing positive emotions in dealing with the economic crisis in Cyprus. Finally, the fourth speech presents evidence regarding aggressive driving and personality traits. These four presentations highlight the role of positive psychology concepts in mental health advocacy and development.
